Old medieval prisons and jails were foul, rotting, dangerous places were men, women and children were appallingly treated. Age or sex was of no concern and even prisoners waiting to be executed often found themselves murdered before their appointment with hangman. Horrific treatment, harsh punishments for the most trivial of crime were dealt out daily. Even more modern prisons were places of danger, anxiety, anguish and punishment. Is it any wonder the tormented souls of prisoners are still set to wander the prisons, looking for justice or racked with guilt?
